  - Animals are Fun -

I just got back from the Zoology club meeting, which was pretty fun. The Columbus Zoo's promotions department brought some animals to show us. I got to pet a Dingo (a cool idea, but really, it's the same as petting a dog), a Serval (a lesser cat species), a Fennec (desert fox, smallest of all fox species), and there was a Binturong (aka bearcat) hanging out on my shoulders for a while. He was going from person to person on their shoulders like we were trees... it was funny. There was also a Civet, an Armadillo, a big Leopard Tortoise, and a Screech Owl. They weren't animals that are on display at the Zoo, the promotions department takes animals given to them from other zoos and stuff and raises them for a while and uses them in presentations like this one, and on talk shows and stuff like that. I guess once they grow up they give them back to whoever they got them from. So they travel all over the country, and they said that when they stay at hotels the animals come with them. So like if they have penguins with them, they'll be hanging out in the bathtub in the room, and they'll have other animals running around in the room. That would be funny to see... The Fennec was the guy's favorite he said, and he kept going on about how it had a little stuffed duck that it loved to play with and took everywhere, so finally he just let it out of the cage and gave it the duck. So there was this tiny little fox running all over the room making squeaking noises and carrying a little yellow stuffed duck in it's mouth. It was funny... Well as I'm sure you're all laughing by now about how big of a nerd I am, and my dinner is ready, I'm going to go eat and watch TV. I was on campus for 12 damn hours today and I'm tired. Later.

Comments:
So, were there any cute girls there?
I want to pet a dingo...
I had my chance when they parked their cars on Mike Hensley's aunt's stove, but I arrived after the party was well over and they drove away again...

Ha ha ha ha ha..... I should have asked the dingo if he was there. I forgot about that...

There was more people there than I thought there would be, and there were a couple of cute girls. I'll have to see if I can't snag me one....

I don't think they do things like that over here; if you want to see animals you have to go to the zoo itself.
But I did see a programme once on San Deigo zoo where the woman brought a load of penguins on an aeroplane for a visit and they were walking up and down the aisles - yep; in with the passengers, not in the hold...it was hilarious! -grin-

They basically do it to reach more people with their education and conservation messages. Personally, i don't like seeing them go on talk shows, because the animals are always really scared, and the host always makes fun of them and shit, and I don't really think they accomplish anything positive. But they also go to schools and other parks around the country to talk to more people.

When I worked in a school library they brought a guide dog which was being trained to help a blind person in to meet the children one afternoon, but that's about it.
I think its something to do with health and safety laws; no animals in schools!

That's retarded. They don't take animals that are dangerous, and they don't let people touch anything that isn't completely docile and non-threatening. Not like it's a big deal though, you could always just go to the zoo and see them. Do they at least have shows and chances to get to get up close to the animals at the zoos?

Mostly, yeah.
They organise things like penguin parades and people can have camel rides and things. But you can't get close to the "dangerous" animals though.
